In Other People’s Words: Aphrodite Matsakis on Trauma

Sometimes other people say it better:

“In order to believe clients’ accounts of trauma, you need to suspend any pre-conceived notions that you have about what is possible and impossible in human experience. As simple as they may sound, it may be difficult to do so.”

Aphrodite Matsakis, Ph.D.

The magnitude of this truth is breathtaking for me. I have witnessed the weight of my truth hit people unprepared. I’ve even experienced it from counselors in the past.

I selected this quote because the very first book I purchased when I began therapy for C-PTSD due to childhood sexual abuse was by Aphrodite Matsakis called I Just Can’t Get Over It: A handbooks for Trauma Survivors.

She really spoke to the core of what I was experiencing and how it can be a lifelong journey to heal and live as I deserve.

I highly recommend her book.

Please, share your thoughts on this quote.
