The Undercurrent

Even on the brightest day,
there is an undercurrent,
dark, thick, unrelenting.

Even in the happiest of moments,
there is an undercurrent,
despondent, pensive, longing.

In the echos of the most jovial laughs,
there is an undercurrent,
anguish, disappointments, grief.

Immersed in this current,
pulled by the undertow,
is a little girl weeping her childhood.

Reaching out her hand,
to me.
